"The Lover" is a beautiful love story. It does not flow because often throughout the retelling, Duras seems to interrupt the past moments with insight from her current perspective as someone much older and experienced. There’s a lingering longing in these confessional interjections, as well as some chastisement. At the end of the story, the young woman leaves in the boat trip back to France, and the Chinese man was looking at her with his love, there was the invisible boundary and the distance that they knew they could never cross to find their own happiness. How come there are always boundaries in life? Can we cross them and do we want to? Happy Reading
